Common Reasons To Power Washing A Deck

3. Prevents Damage
Basic Steps to Power Wash a Deck
Clean Area Before pressure
Sweep the deck to remove loose dirt, leaves, and debris.
Protecting The Plants
We found that watering the plants before applying the cleaning solution protects them from damage. Additionally you can cover any nearby plants with plastic sheeting to protect them from cleaning solutions and high-pressure water.
Initial Rinse
Start by rinsing the deck with water to remove loose dirt and prepare the surface for cleaning.
Applying DIY Detergent / Solution
Mix a combinations of bleach, soap, and water. Play around with what solution works the best. We found that 2% soap (dawn dish soap works great) , 48% Bleach, and 50% water works best for deck cleaning.
Apply the cleaning solution using the pressure washer’s soap dispenser or you can use a DIY strategy of manually applying the solution. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to break down dirt and stains.
Professional Cleaning Solutions
For the best results purchase a professional cleaning solution and then apply it on the wood deck before pressure washing.
Power Washing Your Deck
Time to power wash your deck and remove all the dirt and grime that has covered your deck. Start up your pressure washer and start spraying water out slowly until the pressure kicks in. When the pressure is noticeable point the tip of the power washer to the deck with a 6-12 inch gap from the deck to the tip of the power washer and slowly trace the dirt and grime removing it from the deck point the power washer tip away from you while working. The trick is to point the power washer away from you and keep the tip of the nozzle always moving so it doesn’t damage the wood.
Post Treat Your Deck
After power washing your deck spread a post treatment that usually consists of a cleaning solution which is a mix of bleach, soap, and water. We have noticed that the post treatment gets rid of any left over dirt on the deck and extra level of shine making the deck look brand new.
Final Rinse
Rinse the deck thoroughly with clean water, starting from the highest point and working your way down. Ensure all detergent is removed.
Should I Power Wash My Deck Before Staining?
Yes, power washing your deck before staining is crucial for achieving the best results. It ensures the wood is clean and ready to absorb the stain, leading to a longer-lasting and more attractive finish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Excessive Pressure
We found that using too much pressure can damage the deck surface. Always start with a lower pressure and gradually increase if necessary. Also maintain a good distance from the tip of the power washer to the deck usually 6 – 12 inches.
Inadequate Rinsing
Ensure all cleaning solution is thoroughly rinsed off to prevent residue buildup, which can attract dirt and cause staining.
Wrong Cleaning Solutions
Using the wrong cleaning solutions can damage the deck material. Always check the compatibility of the cleaner with your deck type.
